Sandown Gallery puts young photographers in the ‘Cultural Expression’ frame.
Boojum & Snark in association with the Isle of Wight Council and photographer Holly Jolliffe has given five talented young photographers the opportunity to have their first exhibition.
Cultural Expression will open at Sandown Gallery Boojum & Snark today 17th April and feature images inspired by the themes of the Cultural Olympiad.
The photographic team include Medina High School students Yazmin Cooper and Ollie Tubb as well as Suzie Kidger, Emma Powell and Media Studies student Naomi Linton.
The Olympic Games and Paralympic Games are about more than sport. London 2012 is also staging a Cultural Olympiad – a series of events to showcase the UK’s arts and culture to the rest of the world. Everyone can become part of the Cultural Olympiad click here:
The Cultural Olympiad encourages young people to participate in the arts and celebrates the diversity of life. In exploring these themes the group have produced work that is highly individual and features unique interpretations.
‘Boojum & Snark aims to bring cultural experiences to the island and this was a great opportunity to do just that – Cultural Expression is thought-provoking, entertaining and vibrant,‘ says Boojum co-founder Lauren Fry.
‘Photography is a great form of expression, I love how it freezes a moment you won’t ever recreate. This has given me my inspiration. Being given advice, the ability to experiment, explore and then show my photography on the island is such a massive opportunity.’ says Suzie Kidger.
The five exhibiters:
-
Ollie Tubb has been inspired by craftsmen on the island and how their work is an expression of respect and love for their environment.
-
Suzie Kidger has explored the way props and accessories influence our perceptions.
-
Emma Powell seeks to creative narrative stories within her work by using toys, typography and adjusting depths of field
-
Yazmin Cooper examines how we can be trapped by apprehensions.
-
Naomi Linton looks at the phenomena of modern tribes and how being part of a group can still allow you to express individuality.
Over an 8 week period the group has met regularly. They have used Flickr to critique each others work and have been involved in every aspect of organization including writing press releases, marketing and promotion.
