Crime Down at 2012 Isle of Wight Festival

Initial provisional figures show reports of crime at the Isle of Wight Festival went down again this year from 316 in 2011 to 244 to 2012.   A full analysis of all the figures is underway and these will be published in due course.

Sergeant Dave Steele of Hampshire Constabulary’s Event Planning Team said:

“A dedicated operation to prevent and detect crime was carried out in conjunction with festival organisers, security staff and partner agencies.

“Many officers, staff and special constables worked longer shifts in the challenging conditions to ensure the event retained its relaxed, family-friendly reputation.

“Additional tactics and technology included extra signage with crime prevention advice, enhanced Bluetooth messages, and my @FestivalCop Twitter accont, which attracted hundreds of followers during the event as we tweeted travel, weather and safety advice. “Hampshire Constabulary aims to make the most of technology so we can protect communities and provide an excellent service to the public.

“We’re most grateful for the support of all our partner agencies, particula= rly Isle of Wight Council, Solent ferry companies, bus operator Southern Vectis, and local media organisations, plus the extra invaluable commitment from members of the public, such as 4 x 4 vehicle owners, who gave time and expertise to keep residents and visitors safe.”
