Countdown To Fate of Theatre
Dec 21st, 2009 | By Citizen Media | Isle of Wight News From The Island PulseShanklin Theatre faces the most momentous year in its 120-year history, as the clock ticks down to a council decision on whether to keep the historic venue open.
The prospect of losing one of the island’s best-known entertainment venues has brought messages of support flooding in, as people from all walks of life wish the theatre a happy new year.
Barrie James of Shanklin Theatre Friends, said:
“So many thousands of people – whether islanders or holidaymakers – have had wonderful entertainment at Shanklin Theatre over the years, and this, and the support of so many people today, gives us hope that councillors will decide to give the theatre a new lease of life. We strongly believe that, with the backing of the council and the community as a whole, the theatre can survive and thrive into the future.”
The building should be such an asset as it has so much space, so if anyone can think of more community uses, for groups or charities please get in touch.
The Friends of Shanklin Theatre are urging islanders and visitors to continue sending in messages of support, over 500 letters have already been received.
“We want to make this the biggest round of applause the theatre has ever had,” Barrie said.
