The British Red Cross is appealing for volunteers to help extend support for local people at our medical equipment loan services in Newport and Freshwater.
Due to a lack of volunteers the Red Cross medical equipment loan services in these two depots is unable to open for as many hours as we know is needed. We are urgently appealing for new people to join our team and help this vital community service to stay open for longer.
For a person with mobility problems, having a wheelchair or walking aid can mean the difference between leading a comfortable life and being a prisoner in their home.
As more of us are living longer, living alone, or living with multiple health conditions the demand for care is increasing and the medical equipment loan service is a real priority for the Red Cross.
We are looking for volunteers to issue equipment, working from one of our stores, as well as drivers to help deliver equipment on a variety of days.
Volunteer Maureen Pugh at Newport, has been with the medical equipment loan service for 12 years. She said: “We desperately need volunteers to help us keep the service open for longer. It’s a very well used service in the local community and makes a real difference to people in a time of crisis.
“Volunteering is such a rewarding experience and a great way to meet new people.”
The Red Cross will provide full training as well as the opportunity to attend first aid training for free. All training costs and out of pocket expenses are covered.
The Freshwater medical equipment loan service is located at 101 School Green Lane, Freshwater PO40 9AZ.
The Newport medical equipment loan service is located at Red Cross House, Hunnycross Way, Newport, PO30 5ZD.
How would I be helping people if I volunteered in this role?
As a medical equipment volunteer, you’ll play a key role in helping to bring a little extra freedom and independence to people’s lives.
Your role could include:
-
demonstrating how to use and maintain our wheelchairs and other items
-
helping monitor the delivery and collection of equipment
-
checking and cleaning equipment on its return.
Service manager Jenny Smart said:
“Without volunteers we would never be able to give people the help they need in a crisis. Because we offer so many services across the UK, we depend on people who generously give up their time to help others.
If you can give just a few hours a week to help this service, please get in touch with our volunteering team on 01962 891663 or email HIoWSVolunteerAdmin@redcross.org.uk.”
