Coastguard Rescue Five Boys Off Isle of Wight.

Apr 11th, 2008 | By Island Pulse | Isle of Wight News From The Island Pulse

Fred Caygill reports:   At half past twelve today, Solent Coastguard received a 999 call from the Baywatch restaurant at Bembridge, Isle of Wight reporting five boys in the water.

The boys had been out on the water in a speedboat that had started to sink and was taking on water.  The five boys ended up in the water, none of them wearing lifejackets.

It was fortunate for these five boys that they had been spotted from someone at the restaurant who dialed 999 and two yachts that were nearby who went to their aid and pulled them from the water.

Solent Coastguard called out Bembridge Coastguard rescue team to attend at the marina. Bembridge Coastguard rescue officers attended the marina and gave the boys some valuable advice about the importance of wearing lifejackets when putting to sea.

This incident could quite easily of had a different outcome had it not been for the swift actions of the two yacht owners who went to the aid of these five boys.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency would like to remind all users of the sea of the importance of wearing lifejackets when putting to sea.  The water temperature at this time of the year is very cold and hypothermia can very quickly take effect.
