In Sandown’s Fairway Sports Complex today, a close fought competition between 500 pupils from eight Island teams saw the Cayman Islands knock out last years overall winners, St Helena, to win the Isle of Wight, Primary School Island Games 2009.

The weather may not have been at its best, however the games started in a blaze of colour and music as  Greenmount Samba lead the teams onto the athletics track for the formal opening ceremony.

Students represented eight different Islands, the winners for first place the Cayman Islands closely followed by last years winners St Helena with Menorca taking third place, followed by Rhodes, Greenland, Gibraltar, Western Isles and finally Bermuda.

There were 7 different sports competitions which every Island competed in, these included, Athletics, Tag Rugby, Girls Football, Netball, Tennis, Cycling and Basketball.

For those not participating in the major games a Challenge Zone and the ECB’s Cricket Roadshow, not forgetting the Fairway’s own Rock Climbing wall was provided free to give children additional activities and information throughout the day.

The Primary School Island Games hosted every year, form an important part of the council’s approach to developing a healthy Island legacy for hosting the NatWest International Island Games in 2011.
