Island MP Ferry Fare Campaign Update.

Isle of Wight MP Andrew Turner, has released an update on the campaign for the cross-Solent ferry market to be investigated by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT). 

To date 8,224 businesses and members of the public have supported the campaign either on line or by writing into Mr Turner’s office. (more…)

Isle of Wight Road Safety Course.

David Newble reports:  In order to improve your driving, why not come and join the experts at Isle of Wight Council and share in their motoring and driving knowledge by enrolling on a Better Driving Course?

The next course will run on a Wednesday evening, starting on the 4th June at Enterprise House, Newport from 7.30pm - 9.30pm and will continue each Wednesday evening for 5 further weeks. (more…)

Island Agencies Support Tackling Drugs Week.

Carolyn Keene reports:  National Tackling Drugs Week began this week (19th – 23rd May) and Police on the Isle of Wight are set to continue work in reducing drug related crime across the Island.  

This year, the Home Office are building on the success and momentum of the previous initiative, Tackling Drugs Day and have extended the day to a full week. (more…)

Smoke Alarms Saves Lives.

Simon Butler reports:  The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is sending a message to all Island households, stressing the importance of smoke alarms. It’s after the lives of three people were saved from fires in their homes, almost certainly because smoke alarms did their job and alerted occupants. (more…)

Isle of Wight Motorcyclists Urges to Take Care On Island Roads.

Carolyn Keene reports:  A month-long education and enforcement campaign to tackle the growing numbers of motorcycle casualties on roads in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, has been launched by police.

Since the beginning of the year, eight motorcyclists have lost their lives in collisions across the two counties. (more…)

Gavin Foster reports:  The Isle of Wight Council and Hampshire Constabulary are joining forces with off-licenses in Ryde in a new initiative to tackle alcohol-related anti-social behaviour in the town. (more…)

Carolyn Keene reports: Latest figures from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) state: accidents at work are costing Isle of Wight and Hampshire, £23.5m and every 25 minutes, someone breaks or fractures a bone at work.

As a result the HSE has now launched the ‘Shattered Lives’ campaign, to highlight the devastating consequences of simple slips, trips and falls in the workplace. (more…)

Isle of Wight Climate Change Action Event.

Ray Harrington-Vail reports:  Recycling and Climate Change – a load of rubbish?   The Riverside Centre is to host an information evening which will look at the links between waste, recycling and Climate Change.

The Island is one of the top local authorities for domestic waste recycling. Shortly a new Gasification plant will come on stream which will convert combustible material from households and businesses into energy for some 2000 homes. (more…)

David Newble reports:   The Isle of Wight Council’s cabinet, from today April 8th, will apply new control orders to enforce responsible dog ownership on the Isle of Wight.

New dog control orders are being introduced which will bar dogs from a number of beaches across the Isle of Wight (excluding St Helens and Seagrove Bay) between 1st May and 30th September and will make it an offence not to have dogs on leads on roads and pavements across the entire Island. (more…)

David Newble reports:  Today, as part of Alcohol Awareness Week, the Island’s police, Isle of Wight Council and the Isle of Wight NHS Primary Care Trust are joining forces to promote a safe drinking message on the Isle of Wight.

The Alcohol Awareness campaign runs between 7th and 14th April  aims to highlight the dangers of drinking too much and to encourage sensible drinking among vulnerable groups particularly the young. (more…)

Isle of Wight Red Funnel Campaign.

Carolyn Keene reports:   This morning the Red Funnel ferry terminal in Southampton was subject to a rowdy protest by grey squirrels, who wielded placards reading “Give greys the right to the Isle of Wight” and “Let Greys Go On Holidays”

Dame Ellen MacArthur Isle of Wight Image Island Pulse.

David Newble reports:  At the landmark Isle of Wight green conference Eco Island, record breaking yachtswoman Dame Ellen MacArthur highlighted how she feels modern living has become detached from the resources it consumes.

Held in Cowes, the conference was a rallying call to businesses and organisations to support the Eco Island aim of making the Isle of Wight carbon neutral and energy self-sufficient by 2020. (more…)

Isle of Wight Red Squirrels Steal the Show in Red Funnel Campaign.

Carolyn Keene reports:  Red Funnel ferries have teamed up with the Isle of Wight Red Squirrel Trust and launched a campaign, not just to promote holidays on the Isle of Wight, but to generate greater awareness in protecting the Islands famous red squirrel population.

The Isle of Wight whilst not just the perfect choice for a holiday also provides a habitat for around 3500 rare Red Squirrels, (more…)

Half Term Blitz On Underage Alcohol Sales.

John Coles reports:   Almost 1,000 bottles and cans of alcohol were confiscated across the Isle of Wight and Hampshire as part of a national crackdown on underage drinking during February half term.

As part of the national Home Office initiative, extra officers were out on patrol to seize alcohol found on anyone under the age of 18. (more…)
