Dame Denise Platt, the chairman of the commission responsible for regulating, inspecting and reviewing the standards of social care in the UK is visiting the Island.

During her visit, Dame Denise, who is known as a supporter of bold and imaginative approaches to providing flexible care based on the individual needs and choices of those receiving it, will meet some of the residents who benefit from the IW Council’s pioneering free personal homecare scheme for the over 80s.

Dame Platt, of the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI), will be visiting the Island on Thursday 13th November with Olu Olasode CSCI commissioner and Adrian Hughes, CSCI’s business relationship manager.

With her CSCI colleagues, she will also visit the Help and Care Scheme a partnership project between the IW Council and the IW NHS Primary Care Trust at St Mary’s Hospital, Newport.

She will also meet members of the Local Safeguarding Board and discuss case studies.

Cllr Dawn Cousins, IW Council cabinet members of health and wellbeing, said she was delighted Dame Denise had chosen to visit the Island:

“Dame Denise has spoken of her view that transforming social care – and the lives of those receiving it - is not just about having the right policies and processes in place, it means those who commission and provide care being willing to be bold and exercise their imagination.

“We hope to show Dame Denise that not only do we share that vision but through innovative schemes such as our free homecare and the help and care scheme, we are putting that ethos into practice by offering high quality, personalised care.”
