Buddy Up On National Liftshare Day

Commuters on the Isle of Wight are being challenged to find out how much money they can save by signing up to carsharewight.com and linking up with someone travelling the same way.
National Liftshare Day on Tuesday 9th June aims to encourage and enable commuters to discover the benefits of sharing their drive to work, with people living and working on the Isle of Wight able to search for someone to share their journey on www.carsharewight.com.
Sharing journeys with people making similar trips can significantly reduce travel costs. The typical commuter who car-shares every day will save themselves hundreds of pounds a year.
As well as the financial benefits the scheme also helps the reduce congestion and pollution, cutting the amount of harmful CO2 emitted into the atmosphere.
Since carsharewight.com was launched by the Isle of Wight Council in partnership with the IW College and IW Chamber of Commerce in February this year, almost 140 people have registered with the scheme and posted journeys they regularly make.
Stuart Love, Isle of Wight Council Director of Environment and Neighbourhoods said:
“Just by sharing your car to work with one other person, you are halving your annual commuting costs, but many people still don’t realise how easy it is to find a car-share partner.
“National liftshare Day is the ideal time to join thousands of others in trying out car-sharing – and potentially saving yourself many hundreds of pounds every year.”
To help encourage people to participate in the scheme a poster and flyer are available to download from www.iwight.com.
