Brambles Bank Cricket Match

The annual Brambles Bank Cricket Match between the Island Sailing Club who this year challenged the Royal Southern Yacht Club took place this morning (Saturday 22nd August 2009) in the Solent.

The friendly cricket match is only ever played between the Island Sailing Club and the Royal Southern Yacht Club and was supported this year by celebrity guest appearances of comedian Rory McGrath, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston and Geoff Holt.

The Bramble Bank fixture was first started in the 1950′s by the late Uffa Fox, a sailing companion of the Duke of Edinburgh, of which now only the Royal Southern Yacht Club and the Island Sailing Club compete every year.

A sandbank (Brambles) rises from the water in the summer every year and for a brief spell members of the sailing fraternity race out to play cricket.  The game only lasts as long as the bank lasts (about an hour) at which the sea returns to swamp the pitch.

As is usual the clubs each take it in turn to win and this years winners the Royal Southern Yacht Club, followed the match with breakfast and prize giving at their club.
