Isle of Wight Council’s Annual Big Day Out event (pictured), held on 7th October at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway in Havenstreet proved to be the biggest and most successful yet.

More than 6000 visitors enjoyed the day of entertainment and learnt about the services available to them on the Island. Preparations for next year’s event are already underway.

The Children’s Services event, which is organised by the Council’s event team and supported by the Isle of Wight Children’s Fund, promotes the safeguarding of children and young people and was completely free for Island residents.

Big Day Out Photo Journal 2007: As well as sunny weather, Island families who visited were treated to a wide range of entertainment and the opportunity to get information from more than 90 local organisations and services. A fashion show, face painting, live music and even gladiator games were just some of the activities on offer. Free travel to and from the event was also laid on and the event launched the Family Learning Week. Preparations for next year's event are already underway.

Isle of Wight Council’s cabinet member for Children & Young People Alan Wells said:

“I went along with my family and had an amazing time, and this is an event we can be proud of.  The Big Day Out is rapidly becoming one of the Island’s main events for families to attend.  This year was no different and more than 6000 visitors had a great time. I am already looking forward to next year’s event”.

Simon Dear, Isle of Wight Council’s Children’s Trust Development Advisor said:

“It was amazing to see so many families enjoying the Big Day Out.  The event has a very important theme of promoting the safeguarding of children and young people and it gives services and organisations the chance to showcase what they do to Island families and how Island families can get in touch.”

It was a hugely successful event thanks to everyone involved in helping and thanks to all the Island families who came along.
