If you have ever felt you were destined for great things, then Carisbrooke Castle is the place for you this month! At Time Travellers Go…Knights & Princesses youngsters can learn all they need to know to become a proud knight or a haughty princess, and really put on the airs and graces.
Time Travellers Go Knights & Princesses, Carisbrooke Castle – Sunday 12 August to Wednesday 15 August 2012.
From Sunday 12 until Wednesday 15 August, budding lords and ladies can master the art of courtly chivalry and become medieval nobility as colourful characters spin tales of chivalrous deeds and daring quests.
Throughout the event the castle will be home to a living history camp, where young visitors can discover fascinating facts about the clothes our medieval ancestors wore – and just how glamorous the nobility were compared to their servants. They can take part in junior jousting and a medieval battle and join fearsome knights in full armour, who, between bouts of fighting will let keen young trainees try on a helmet and hold a sword.
Those with a strong stomach can meet the gong farmer – the man who emptied the toilets of the rich and famous residents of Carisbrooke Castle. If they dare they can get up close and personal with him to learn about medieval toilet technology, hear surprising tales of what turned up in medieval toilets and riffle through a ‘lucky dip’ of archaeological finds discovered in medieval ‘jakes’!

Capering around the castle to entertain noble visitors will be medieval musician Wynndebagge, teaching young Lords and Ladies all the moves they need to woo their sweethearts and cut a dash on the dance floor.
Youngsters can also take part in a fun Royal Trail to seek out sneaky monarchs hidden around the Castle.
Children who take part in this event can join the English Heritage Time Travellers Club. Issued with their own passport and a special password to access top-secret games on the English Heritage website, children can collect a sticker when they complete each historical adventure – the Time Traveller series continues at Carisbrooke Castle throughout the summer – to win a medal and eventually become a fully fledged Time Traveller.
Time Travellers Go…Knights & Princesses runs from 10am to 5pm from Sunday 12 to Wednesday 15 August. Normal admission prices apply, plus an additional £1 for every child attending (including EH members): £7.50 for adults, £6.80 for concessions, £5.40 for children, and £19.50 for a family ticket. English Heritage members free. Visitors can also explore historic Carisbrooke Castle and meet its most famous residents – the Carisbrooke donkeys.
