The Isle of Wight Council would like to hear from groups and individuals planning events to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee next year.
The Queen came to the throne in 1952 and next year will become the second monarch in British history to celebrate 60 years on the throne, the first being Queen Victoria – who had strong links with the Island through Osborne House.
A section of the council’s website has been set aside so that residents can share information about local events such as street parties or community picnics. The website (www.iwight.com/jubilee) also contains a range of information about national events along with helpful hints and tips for event organisers.
Next year’s celebrations will centre around the first weekend in June. The late May bank holiday will be moved to Monday 4 June and an additional jubilee bank holiday on Tuesday 5 June will create an extended weekend for the festivities.
Chairman of the Diamond Jubilee Organising Committee, Councillor David Williams, said: “I have no doubt that the people of the Isle of Wight will celebrate this historic occasion in style. The extended bank holiday weekend provides plenty of opportunity for communities to come together and mark the Queen’s 60 year reign. If you would like to share your event with others, please get in touch with us so we can add your event to the jubilee website.”
Jubilee events should be emailed to anna.price@iow.gov.uk. It is hoped the web pages will become a planning hub for the Island’s jubilee activity and help to avoid key community events clashing with one another.
