Amphibian Ark Day @ IOW Zoo
Aug 23rd, 2008 | By Charlotte Corney | In: Advertising, Entertainment, Environment, Events, Home News, Isle of Wight, NewsIts not easy being green or yellow, or red, or blue, or mottled and the Isle of Wight Zoo have been busy throughout the year, raising funds for 2008 Year of the Frog.
Fundraising efforts culminate on August Bank Holiday, with a fun packed day of frog-themed activities.
A sponsored spacehopper event with the animal care team dressing as frogs carrying out their duties on spacehoppers - should be fun to follow. There are also some rare amphibians at the zoo which are being raised and cared for as part of the global effort to protect this critically endangered group of animals.
The world’s amphibians are facing an extinction crisis. Conservationists across the planet are working together to find solutions to the problems of habitat loss, climate change and disease that threaten to wipe out hundreds of species of frogs, toads, newts, salamanders and caecilians. The zoo community have a vital role to play.
The most critically endangered species are being taken into specially built biosecure units where they can be bred and kept safe until the problems are under control.
This enormous project has been aptly christened the Amphibian Ark, and has been adopted by the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) as their conservation campaign for 2008.
The Isle of Wight Zoo invites everyone to come along and join in the fun!
