Jul 12th, 2009 | By Leigh Jackman | Isle of Wight News From The Island Pulse

Northcourt house on the Isle of Wight, is set to become the backdrop to a wonderful evening which is planned to celebrate Algernon Charles Swinburne’s centenary.

A Charity Organ & Piano Recital will take place on Thursday, with music by Joe West and a talk by the American academic Terry Myers on the great Victorian Poet Algernon Swinburne and his associations with the Island.

Algernon Charles Swinburne is one of the lesser know of the Island’s Victorian inhabitants but was once regarded as England’s premier poet and the successor to Alfred Lord Tennyson and Robert Browning

When Swinburne was living at Northcourt (pictured) during 1861 he wrote to his sister Alice who was then living in Italy, saying that he greatest pleasure  just now is when Mary practices Handle on the organ. This same organ that has been absent from Northcourt for a number of years is now back in situ and will be played for the first time by Jo West at this fund raising event.

The Charity Organ & Piano Recital by Jo west to celebrate Algernon Swinburne’s centenary, takes place on Thursday, July 16th.  Guests are invited to bring their own picnics and will receive a free glass of wine.
