Agreement Signed To Boost Island Tourism
Aug 13th, 2008 | By Gavin Foster | In: Advertising, Business, Council, Islandwide, Lead, News, TourismAn agreement to work together on a co-ordinated approach to tourism marketing has been agreed by the Isle of Wight Council and the Chamber of Commerce, Tourism and Industry.
The Memorandum of Understanding signed by the two organisations (pictured) sets out clearly which areas each will take responsibility for. The purpose of which to ensure the Island is marketed in an effective, comprehensive and co-ordinated approach.
While the council will lead a partnership approach to the strategic marketing of the Island, the chamber will arrange other tactical and marketing initiatives such as the pocket guides and, ultimately, the IW Guide.
The collaboration follows months of discussions between the two organisations over the roles each was best placed to fulfil.
Cllr George Brown, IW Council cabinet member with responsibility for tourism said:
“The Island is fortunate it has two strong organisations now working together in clear concert to promote the Island as a first class, year-round destination.
“The agreement allows us as a local authority to concentrate on what it does best – marketing and promoting the Island as a fantastic place to work and to invest as well as to visit – and the chamber to represent the interests of its members and the wider industry through tactical promotion of tourism.
“With the current uncertain economic climate is it vital we work in partnership to ensure the Island’s crucial visitor economy remains buoyant. The council is with partners currently orchestrating three major strategic campaigns and I can assure the industry we will continue to meet our obligations to market and promote this wonderful destination.”
David Groocock, Chair of the Chamber Tourism Board, said
“This is good news for the future of tourism on the Isle of Wight. We are very excited about our new initiatives to promote the island in partnership with the Isle of Wight council.”
The memorandum was signed by the heads of both organisations at the Tourist Information Centre in Newport Guildhall on Friday Aug 8th. Image supplied: Copyright Isle of Wight Council Media & Communications.
