Geoffrey and his wife Sue moved to the Isle of Wight from Merseyside, in 2003 and opened  Wood End Enterprises.

He was appointed deputy lieutenant for the Isle of Wight in 2009, which made him “the official link between the island and royalty at formal engagements“.   In 2010 after collapsing at his home on the Island, he underwent a course of radiotherapy.

The 68-year-old actor was well known and much loved for his portrayal of Eddie Yates In Coronation Street, as well as slobbish Onslow in Keeping Up Appearances, and Twiggy in the Royle Family.

His friend and colleague Ricky Tomlinson told ITV news.

“Geoff was not just an actor. He was my mate.”

A spokesman from Coronation Street continued:  “We are very sad to hear of the death of Geoffrey Hughes.

Geoffrey was patron of the Red Squirrel Trust and an active supporter of many local charities and organisations including the Earl Mountbatten Hospice and the RNLI .

As a local cheerful character, he will be sadly missed by many.
