Simon Dickson reports:  Did you know Downing Street has a dedicated channel on YouTube?

The launch back in May 2007 saw former PM Tony Blair become the first world leader with his own channel on the popular video-sharing site and today we see the Downing Street tree getting dressed for Christmas.

Simon says: at first iit was a curious mix of mini-documentaries, recent speeches, clips of TV appearances, and miscellaneous public events.  Mostly material we’d already seen on the pm.gov.uk website, and (interestingly) not all of it featuring the PM.

The inauguration of the new PM Gordon Brown gave the channel its largest fillip, his arrival in Downing Street having been named prime minister by the Queen racking over over 95,000 views, after the video of Tony Blair leaving for the final time attracted 121,000 views.

The official 10 Downing Street YouTube channel provides free access to a a growing number of free films and videos from the office of the British Prime Minister.  These include exclusive new materials from Gordon Brown as well as a fascinating collection of historical prime Minister’s interviews, broadcasts and speeches.  The latter include archive materials from the early 1900s to the present day footage of including Lloyd George and Margaret Thatcher.
