Carolyn Keene reports:  Osborne House (pictured), Queen Victoria’s palace-by-the-sea on the Isle of Wight, is to play host to a summer music festival at which Paul Weller and Girls Aloud will headline the two-day event.

Isle of Wight Festival organisers Solo are launching the event briefly entitled Osbourne House, which takes place 26th and 27th July.  English Heritage is backing the gigs, intended to encourage wider public access and increase income for stately homes. (more…)

Royal Visitor On The Island.

Carolyn Keene reports:  Today HRH the Princess Royal is visiting the Isle of Wight, for three official engagements.

Its expected to be a busy day for the Princess, as colonel-in-chief of the Royal Logistic Corps, she will visit the E (IW Rifles) Troop, part of 266 Squadron Royal Logistic Corps and TA Centre at Newport’s Drill Hall Road in connection with the 100th anniversary of the Territorial Army. (more…)

‘Breast’ Foot Forward In Isle of Wight Walking Festival.

Simon Butler reports:   Next month a hundred walkers will be putting their ‘breast foot forward’ in the tenth Isle of Wight Walking Festival.  As part of a charity event, men and women will don bras to stroll between Gurnard and Cowes on 3rd May. 

The fun event also has a serious aim to increase breast cancer awareness and raise money for Breast Cancer Research. (more…)

Praise From Bishop On Eco Island Vision.

David Newble reports:  The Bishop of Portsmouth the Rt Rev Kenneth Stevenson has praised Isle of Wight’s Eco-Island vision during a debate in the House of Lords.

Dr Stevenson who was one of the keynote speakers at the Isle of Wight’s Council-organised Eco-Island conference recently told the House that the Eco-Island project was the “most ambitious and laudable” that the Island had ever undertaken in its history. (more…)

Crimestoppers Tip-Offs On The Up.

John Coles reports:   Figures released this week have shown, more people on the Isle of Wight are calling Crimestoppers to report crimes.  A direct result there has been an increase in the number of arrests made following of tip-offs.

Calls to Crimestoppers, are all made under the protection of anonymity and have increased by 20 per cent to a record 1,777. (more…)

Isle of Wight Crash Victim: Joan Elsie King.Carolyn Keene reports:  Isle of Wight Police are appealing for information after naming Joan Elsie King (pictured) as the woman who died following a two-vehicle road traffic collision between Apse Heath and Arreton.

At around 1pm on Wednesday, April 16th, Mrs King, from Whitwell, was driving over the Fighting Cocks crossroad near Apse Heath when her green Suzuki was in collision with a black Vauxhall Cavalier heading towards Newport. (more…)

Anthony Minghella CBE 1954-2008 Isle of Wight: Island Pulse Tribute.

Gavin Foster reports:  The life of Oscar-winning filmmaker Anthony Minghella is to be celebrated at a thanksgiving service in Newport on Saturday April 26th.

The service is being organised by the Isle of Wight Council with the agreement of Mr Minghella’s family. Mr Minghella was born in Ryde and remained a passionate ambassador for his native Island throughout his illustrious career. (more…)
