Bomb Experts Tackle UXB In Cowes.

John Coles reports:   A safety zone was put in place today (Monday) after an unexploded device was found in Cowes on the Isle of Wight.

Police were called shortly after 10am today following the discovery of the device in a field close to BAE integrated systems.  Bomb disposal units are attending the incident and a 150 metre exclusion zone has been put in place around the area. (more…)

Carolyn Keene reports:   The Isle of Wight Photographer of the Year (IWPOY) Exhibition of 2008 was launched at the Quay Arts Centre, on Thursday and runs through to Monday 28th April on the ‘Cafe Wall’.

The fifty shortlisted images from the 2007 competition are being exhibited from those photographers lucky enough to be selected for the ‘IWPOY Wall of Fame’ by a panel of judges.  (more…)

Minster Status For Island Church.

Sts Thomas Church Isle of Wight pre scaffolding.Carolyn Keene reports:   The Anglican church at the heart of the Isle of Wight has been designated a ‘minster’ church.

Sts Thomas Church (pictured) in Newport has been granted the honorary title to reflect its important role in Island and Civic Life.  Its proximity to the Isle of Wight Council offices means it has become the Island’s civic church and will now be known as the Minster Church of Sts Thomas, Newport. New Framework For Island Traffic Management.

John Coles reports:  From today (31st March), Isle of Wight road users are set to benefit from changes in the Traffic Management Act. 

New powers will ensure motorists in England benefit from a fairer and more transparent parking framework, while, from tomorrow (1st April), councils will be able to use new measures to better co-ordinate street works, reducing disruption for all road users, residents and local businesses. (more…)

Neil Gibbs and Chris Mortimer, who are partners in three Ventnor sea front pubs, The Spyglass Inn, The Met and The Mill Bay Inn have always been avid supporters of local events and organisations. (more…)

David Newble reports:   The Chairman of the International Island Games Association and members of its Committee visited the Isle of Wight this weekend where they got to meet the Islands young sporting stars of the future.

Jorgen Pettersson and the other members of the ten-strong committee held their latest meeting on the Isle of Wight as part of the run up to the 2011 Island Games which will take place here on the Island. (more…)

Google Supports Earth Hour.

Regular Google search engine users in the UK will notice today that the lights have been turned out on the Google homepage and the screen is now black.   This has been done as a visible gesture to raise awareness of a worldwide energy conservation effort called Earth Hour. (more…)

Carolyn Keene reports:   As residents of the Isle of Wight prepare to put the clocks forward for the summer, spare a thought for Malcolm Hood.

On Sunday morning, while the rest of us are deep in sleep, Malcolm will climb the Osborne House clock tower (pictured) to move the hands and wind the clock 130 times before moving on to the plethora of timepieces, scattered around the house. (more…)

Carolyn Keene reports:   Portsmouth striker John Utaka (pictured) went back to the classroom this week, to share his thoughts on education with the pupils of St Catherine’s School in Ventnor on the Isle of Wight.

The school appears to be popular news, as Bestival’s Rob Da Bank (Radio DJ) recently became a patron and plans, (despite objections from residents) costing £3m to refurbish the school were approved this week by councillors. (more…)

Tim Walker reports:   The Queen’s appointment of television gardener Alan Titchmarsh (pictured) as her new High Sheriff of the Isle of Wight has, apparently, led to an unlikely rebellion.

Councillors on the Island have raised objections to the Yorkshireman carrying out the role, to which he will be sworn in next month, because his house on the Island is just a second home. (more…)
