Island Mothers ‘Overstate’ Baby Allergies.

Researchers at the University of Portsmouth have found that, contrary to popular belief, the rate of food hypersensitivity is not rising. 

In a three-year £600,000 research funded by the Food Standards Agency, Dr Carina Venter studied nearly all the babies born in one year on the Isle of Wight.  The number of babies believed by their mothers to be allergic to some foods is disproportionate to the actual number found to be allergic, according to a study. Carolyn Keene reports: The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) have announced new powers to stop benefit fraudsters in their tracks.

From March DWP fraud investigators will use information held by credit reference agencies to pinpoint benefit cheats who are living together but claiming to be single for benefit purposes. (more…)

Isle of Wight Rogue Traders Targeted By Council.

Hundreds of cheap imitation sunglasses computer games, music compact discs and DVDs with a street value of around £5,000 have been crushed by Isle of Wight Council Trading Standards Officers in a clamp down on rogue traders.   

Where possible, goods are recycled, or reused.  However, the discs could not be rewritten and officers could not be sure that the sunglasses were safe against ultraviolet rays. (more…)

Trail Break’s long running Isle of Wight MTB Festival has a new name and a new challenge for 2008; ‘Big Wight’.

The Isle of Wight MTB Festival formerly “Wight Diamond”, has been run every year since 1996, growing from a two day navigator competition into the multi event and full social weekend is today. (more…)

Have Your Say On Island Plan Blueprint.

The consultation period for Isle of Wight Council’s three options for educational reform continues this week with more public meetings.  Almost 350 people attended the meeting at Ventnor Middle School with half a dozen people unable to get in due to capacity being reached. (more…)

A brief stint on the ocean wave helped one young Isle of Wight photographer sail to victory in the JPMorgan Asset Management (JPMAM) Round the Island Race Photo Competition.

Yachts & Yachting Magazine as organisers of the competition put a call out for entries of the best photographs from everyone attending the JPMAM Round the Island Race in 2007 and to judge the winners was none other than Sir Robin Knox Johnston. (more…)

The Isle of Wight Council library service will be temporarily closing most of its branch libraries for one day, from tomorrow on noted dates to facilitate staff training.

Island Detectives are appealing for witnesses and information after two arsons in Ryde during the early hours of Sunday, January 27th.

The first incident occurred at 6.38am at an address in Jellicoe Road. Some form of accelerant had been poured through the letterbox and the front door set on fire. Damage was also caused to the front windows. (more…)
