Using hand-held Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers similar to the technology used in satellite navigation devices now common in vehicles, ‘geocachers’ can explore Northwood Park and discover its nature and heritage by following trails to hidden treasure, or ‘caches’. (more…)

Following the resignation of Mr Christopher Mortimer a vacancy now exists in the Ventnor West Ward.  This would appear to be a popular seat, as five candidates have put themselves forward to fill the void left by Mr Mortimer. (more…)

A new Isle of Wight Safeguarding Adults Policy designed to protect vulnerable adults from abuse is to be launched today (Friday) at Ryde Theatre.

The new policy was drawn up following a government Health Select Committee enquiry, whose aims are to ensure a more co-ordinated approach between agencies such as the Isle of Wight Council, the Island’s health service, the police, care home owners and voluntary sector partners. (more…)

Parents of children who are due to start a new school in September 2008 have until 4.30pm today to submit forms to the Isle of Wight Council’s Admissions Office at County Hall in Newport.  The opportunity is also available to complete the application form online via Isle of Wight Council’s EduWight website. Island Adult Services ‘Two Star’ Service.

Isle of Wight Council adult services has ‘promising’ prospects for improvement after being rated as having ‘uncertain’ prospects for improving last year according to the government.

The Commission For Social Care Inspection the independent government body which looks at the council’s performance in adult services rated the authority adult services as a ‘two star’ service and highlighted the council’s strong leadership leading to promising judgement as well as its commissioning of services and use of resources. Police Probe Undercliff Report.

The Isle of Wight Council’s pledge today to act swiftly and decisively on the recommendations received in report into why contractors were unlawfully appointed to repair Undercliff Drive would appear to be fulfilled. 

The evidence gathered on behalf of the Isle of Wight Council in the the Wragge and Co report has led to police being called in by Isle of Wight Council Chief Executive Joe Duckworth. (more…)

Drug Action Team Tackle Drug Misuse On The Island.

The Isle of Wight Council’s Drug Action Team (DAT) are staging their annual stakeholder event today to highlight issues surrounding drug misuse on the Island. 

The police, health professionals, the prison service and voluntary groups have been invited to the annual conference, which will focus on the good progress that has been made on the Isle of Wight to provide accessible treatment and support for people who misuse drugs. (more…)

Bembridge Wins Cash For Minibus In Peoples Millions.

Bembridge Friendship Circle on Isle of Wight are the toast of the town after winning an £67,982 slice of good cause cash from the Big Lottery Fund’s regional People’s Millions contest.

ITV Meridian South viewers voted for the project to win the award after a nail biting head-to-head contest for community votes screened on Tuesday on ITV Meridian South regional news. (more…)

The final report on ‘Undercliff Drive Scheme’ is due to go before the Investigatory and Disciplinary Committee today 29th November.

Since March, Wragge & Co have been gathering evidence from inside the Council and in October, members of the public were invited in to contribute to the Isle of Wight Council’s inquiry into the way work on the Undercliff Drive scheme was procured. (more…)

Isle of Wight Police Name Motorbike Crash Victim.

Police have now named the man who died when his motorbike was in collision with a car at Mersley Down on the Isle of Wight last weekend.

Paul Geoffrey Tanner from East Cowes, died at St Mary’s Hospital after his Kawasaki motorbike was in collision with a Toyota Yaris car.  The collision happened at the junction of Rowlands Lane and the downs road at Mersley Down at 2.20pm on Saturday, November 24th. (more…)

Schools Admission Pack Deadline 30th November.

Many parents of children who are due to start a new school on the Isle of Wight in September 2008 are still yet to return their school admission forms ahead of the 30th November deadline. 

It is very important that the forms are received by Isle of Wight Council’s Admissions Office at County Hall in Newport by 4.30pm on 30th November.  Parents should not return them direct to schools. (more…)

Isle of Wight Angler Steve Cave from Sandown is celebrating this week after setting a new record.  Steve (pictured) smashed the British shore caught bass record when he reeled in a 19lb 11oz 12dr Bass using whole squid bait, off Sandown Pier on Saturday.

Consumer Direct Warns Of Scam Calls.

Consumer Direct has been made aware of a scam involving consumers being telephoned by people, alleging to be from Consumer Direct asking for personal and financial information as part of a survey.

These callers have no connection with Consumer Direct, and their intention may be to use the information for identity theft or to run up bills or commit crimes using stolen details. (more…)

All Properties Get HIP For Christmas.

The Government’s Home Information Packs (Hips) will be rolled out to cover all properties by Christmas.

Housing Minister Yvette Cooper said the extension of the scheme to one and two-bedroom properties from December 14th would help first-time buyers.   However, surveyors have warned that the extra cost of the packs for sellers could lead to fewer “starter homes” being put on the market. (more…)

Every Child Matters is a national government initiative designed to unite agencies to improve children’s wellbeing.  Organisations involved with providing services to children team up in new ways, sharing information and working together, to protect children and young people from harm and help them achieve what they want in life.
