Schoolboys Hurt In Road Traffic Accident At Chale.

Two schoolboys have been rushed to hospital this morning after falling into the path of a car at Chale on the Isle of Wight.

The pair were part of a group of children waiting for a school bus and are believed to have slipped down a bank into the path of an orange Skoda at the junction of Spanners Close and Chale Green. (more…)

Halloween Message From Fire service And police To Island Youngsters Give Respect-Get RespectPolice are working in partnership with the Isle of Wight and Hampshire Fire Service, local councils and trading standards to combat the associated problems of Halloween and to ensure the public stay safe.

The partnership’s aim is to educate children and young people about staying safe at Halloween, as well as to have respect for those that choose not to participate in the celebrations.  They will also be giving out free glow-in-the-dark wristbands with the logo ‘Give Respect – Get Respect’. (more…)

Today the children’s programme Blue Peter are planning to broadcast footage of the Jubilee Sailing Trust’s Pumpkin Regatta.  Filming took place earlier this month, when brave sailors attempted to pilot giant hollowed-out pumpkins and sail to the Isle of Wight.

Island Pulse Intro: Wight Diamonds Marching Band Awards 2007.Earlier this month (Saturday 6th October) members, supporters, families and friends of the Wight Diamonds Marching Band gathered at the Camp Hill Club, Newport, for the band’s annual awards evening.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight police are urging residents not to give burglars an open invitation to their home while they celebrate with traditional fireworks and bonfire parties.  The increasing hours of darkness and the noise of fireworks create enough distraction for burglars to take advantage of insecure homes. The Isle of Wight County Press (IWCP) had its knuckles rapped by the Press Complaints Commission (PCC) after reporting ‘court mitigation’ as if it was an ‘established fact’.   The PCC watchdog upheld a complaint against the IWCP after an article effectively stated as fact that a woman and her friend were lesbian lovers, in both the headline and opening paragraph.

Trial Opens On Death of ‘Ouzo’ Sailors.

The trial of a car ferry officer accused of killing three sailors who drowned when their yacht ‘Ouzo’ disappeared will start today.  The sailors left Bembridge on the Isle of Wight  (August 20th 2006) to sail to the Dartmouth Regatta but never arrived.  All three men were found in the sea off the Isle of Wight a few days later, the yacht has never been found.

50th Anniversary Of Island Plane Crash.

A Service is to be held on 18th November at St Mary’s Brook to mark the 50th Anniversary of the biggest air disaster on the Island to date.  A total of 44 passengers and crew died on 15th November 1957 when an aircraft crashed in a quarry near the village of Brook on the Isle of Wight. (more…)

According to the British Youth Council (BYC), police and local authorities are “demonising” children by launching “discriminatory” campaigns highlighting anti-social behaviour in the run-up to Halloween and Bonfire Night.

BYC say forces such as Hampshire and Isle of Wight are contradicting Government policy on promoting positive images of youth, by handing out posters suggesting that it is dangerous to sell flour and eggs to children and producing literature threatening youngsters with imprisonment and fines. Electoral Review Recommendations Published.

In February 2007 the Boundary Committee for England started a Further Electoral Review of the Isle of Wight.  Stage two ended on 24th October 2007 and draft recommendations have now been published.  There now follows a consultation period, during which Islander’s are encouraged to comment on the draft recommendations of the future electoral arrangements contained in the report for the Isle of Wight. According to a new survey many Britons are suffering from “eco-fatigue”, with more than a quarter tired of the attention green issues are receiving.  The ICM report released for the Ideal Home Show reveals we are a nation of eco-cynics and green ego-centrics, with many of us not believing we can make a difference, exaggerating our eco friendliness and only recycling because it’s fashionable.
