Round the Island Swimmers All at Sea

Third time lucky and the Round the Island Swim is now underway with the swimmers expected to return to Ryde Pier on the Isle of Wight at approx 3pm today.

Public Consultation on Driving Tests.

The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) is carrying out a public consultation on modernising arrangements to take driving tests.

The Agency also proposes to consult over the price of driving tests.  It intends to increase the fee of theory tests for car drivers and motorcycle riders by £1.50 on 1st April 08.  It is also proposes to increase the practical car test by £8.  This will see the cost of the theory test set at £30 and the practical test at £56.50. Isle of Wight Evensong for Diana Princess of Wales.

A Service of Evensong is to be held tonight at St Thomas Church in Newport to mark the 10th anniversary of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales.  The service will be led by the Venerable Caroline Baston, the Archdeacon of the Isle of Wight. (more…)

A Wet Summer on Isle of Wight.

Met Office figures revealed today say this summer looks set to have been the wettest since UK rainfall records began in 1914.  Provisional rainfall figures (up to 28th August) show that the UK as a whole had 358.5mm of rain, just beating the previous record of 358.4mm in 1956. (more…)

Isle of Wight Council On Island Housing Provision.

The IW Council has noted the South East England Regional Assembly (SEERA ) announcement over future housing provision on the Island.  The target of 520 units of accommodation a year until 2026 reaffirms existing demands placed on the Island by SEERA. (more…)

Good News! Day Tickets are now available on site for the White Air Festival 2007!

White Air 2007 is now in full swing with the warm and sunny August weather keeping the atmosphere lively.  As the calm weather slows down the action on the water the main park is being put to some good use, with open park sessions and displays running throughout the day.

Annual Open Day at Isle of Wight Crematorium.

The Isle of Wight Council Crematorium will be holding its annual Open Day this Saturday (September 1st) allowing access to all areas of the facility.  Refreshments will be served throughout the day and any donations are given to the Motor Neurone Disease Association. (more…)

Island Prison Officers Strike.

Prison officers at Parkhurst, Albany and Camp Hill prisons on the Isle of Wight have today gone on strike in a dispute over pay despite the government banning them from taking industrial action.

Prison officers are angry at the pay deal they have been offered which they say would mean only receiving a 1.9 per cent pay rise.  The day of protest also forms part of a national day of action affecting 140 prisons nationwide.
