The Carnival festivities started off early Saturday morning on Stroud Field, Freshwater. Roz Dennison as commericial co-ordinator of the Freshwater and Totland Carnival Committee had ensured the field was stocked full of interesting local stalls and charities to full blown inflatables to keep everyone entertained in the run up to the main Carnival Parade.
Derek Sandy opened with his quality Caribbean sounds and the beat continued with colourful tunes from the Sundance Steel Band. David Randini was on hand to work his Magic, unfortunately the heavens opened just when Punch and Judy were to make an appearance, there was also exciting displays from Wolfguard, Tug of War, RSPCA and of course the Fancy Dress.
It’s the start of a James Bond scene and an exclusive boat hurtles our hero towards a small Island; the camera pans across to familiar looking faces like Grand Prix racing driver David Coulthard, Olympic Gold medallist Ben Ainslie and Big Brother host Davina McCall. This year Skandia Cowes Week could provide just such a setting as the new James Bond, aka Daniel Craig, is tipped to join the rich and famous at the world’s oldest, largest and most fun sailing regatta.
Friends train for Cowes Week in aid of deaf children.
Â
Julia Brett (36), and Richard Beardsley (35), both from Oxford will join a team of deaf and hearing sailors taking part in Cowes Week 2006 (29 July – 5 August).
Â
The five-strong team, working in partnership with the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) will be competing in the sonar fleet. The NDCS is the only UK charity solely dedicated to the support of deaf children and young people, their families, and professionals working with them.
It truly was Sandown Carnival’s “Striking Performance”
Thunderstorms and Lightening with threats of torrential rain, hardly the best weather for Sandown Carnival on Wednesday. The spirits were not to be dampened and all who participated and viewed the spectacular event, agreed “Nobody was going to Rain on that Parade”
